Thesis: Examples in Plato’s Dialogues
(Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Gyburg Uhlmann)

This study investigates the role and function of examples in Plato’s dialogues, with a specific focus on their methodological and pedagogical relevance for knowledge acquisition. By integrating Aristotelian concepts and conducting a meticulous analysis of often-overlooked examples in the so-called aporetic and virtue dialogues, this research aims to identify recurring patterns and variations in the use of examples. Furthermore, it explores their relation to the skopos of each dialogue, offering deeper insights into Plato’s works and the epistemological status of examples.
