NUEDIGITAL – UTN X Fraunhofer: The emotional side of artificial intelligence

Date: 10. July 2024Time: 17:00 – 19:30Location: JOSEPHS – Offenes Innovationslabor (Augustinerstraße 19, 90403 Nürnberg)

If AI can analyze emotions, what does that mean for society? The UTN and Fraunhofer IIS would like to enter into a dialog with you about the opportunities and risks of Emotional AI.

What emotions are and how they relate to reason and cognition has been the subject of controversial debate since ancient times and is still controversial today. Are they completely separate from each other or are emotions dependent on knowledge? And how can we actually recognize a particular emotion? Can we deduce from physical reactions that someone is angry, jealous, bored or in joyful anticipation? How much of our emotions do we reveal through facial expressions, posture or even body temperature and pulse? Are we revealing more about ourselves than we want to?

With the help of artificial intelligence, large amounts of data can now be collected and analyzed about individuals. Does this make us like an open book for computers? Try it out! At the Nuremberg Digital Festival, you can have your emotions analyzed by artificial intelligence with the help of the SHORE® software library from Fraunhofer IIS.

We are also offering two keynote speeches. At 5:15 pm, Jens-Uwe Garbas, head of the Smart Sensing and Electronics research department at Fraunhofer IIS, will provide exciting insights into the topic "When technology learns to feel." Afterwards, you can learn more about "Strong Feelings: What Literature Can Tell Us About Our Emotions" in the keynote lecture at 6:15 pm by Prof. Gyburg Uhlmann, Founding Chair of the Department of Liberal Arts and Sciences at UTN.

Discuss with us where the limits and opportunities of such technologies lie and what role literature can play in this. What are the purposes of programs that create an emotional picture of a person's mood? Where are they useful? Where do we need to discuss whether such data analysis is compatible with our liberal social order? And where are they part of the digital transformation that we want to advance as a society?

Let's dive into the world of emotions together!

The event will take place in German. Registration for the event via the website of Nürnberg Digital Festivals.
