The core focus of the Energy Systems and Market Design Lab lies in exploring the transformation of global energy systems, digitalization, and the growing significance of artificial intelligence.

The Lab develops models for analyzing current energy policy issues and applies these in the context of European and global energy systems. In our research projects, we often cooperate with scientists from other disciplines and rely on a lively exchange with politics and business in applied research. Based on the results of our research, we are involved in science-based policy advice. Some current focuses of our work include:

• Development of multilevel equilibrium models for the analysis of electricity, gas, and hydrogen systems and markets
• Development of mathematical methods for solving mixed-integer and nonlinear multistage optimization problems for energy markets
• Model development and market design for sector coupling of electricity, gas, and hydrogen
• Market-based congestion management and regional price signals in the electricity market
• Energetic and market-based solution concepts for climate-neutral districts in urban areas
• The role of artificial intelligence in improving forecasts and increasing the efficiency of energy systems and markets
