The university of the future is green: Our climate protection concept

We are rethinking university! This applies not only to teaching and research. Due to the exceptional opportunity to build a completely new campus, we are integrating innovative climate protection concepts into the planning right from the start. Our focus is on various areas:

Creating a strategic basis and planning aid for future development and construction projects and other climate protection measures.

Identify and implement technical and economic potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Integration of climate protection targets in various areas such as space management, own properties, procurement, IT and data centers, street lighting, renewable energies, mobility, wastewater and waste.

Integrate climate protection goals into the long-term operation of the campus.

For this purpose, we established a climate protection management office within the Real Estate Unit to coordinate the development of a university-wide climate protection concept and implement initial measures.

The final climate protection concept will be based on the national climate protection targets and enable subsequent adjustments to climate change. The requirements for the concept include:

  • An analysis of UTN’s current climate protection activities and the preparation of an energy and greenhouse gas balance sheet.
  • Derivation of potential for greenhouse gas reduction and development of various scenarios with clear reduction targets.
  • Prioritization of fields of action with the involvement of all relevant stakeholders.
  • Creation of a catalog of measures to reduce greenhouse gases.
  • Development of a strategy for the long-term continuation of climate protection, including a controlling concept and a communication strategy.

Through these measures, we not only aim to reduce the environmental impact, but also to promote sustainable and future-oriented development of the campus.

Clear goals for sustainable development

The climate protection concept will become an integral part of UTN’s sustainability strategy. Through this integration, we ensure that climate protection is firmly embedded in the long-term development of UTN and makes a significant contribution to achieving its environmental goals.

The project is funded as part of the municipal guideline under the project title “KSI: Creation of an integrated climate protection concept for the Technical University of Nuremberg”. The project partner is Zukunft – Umwelt – Gesellschaft (ZUG) gGmbH as the project management organization for the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.
