The University of Technology Nuremberg (UTN) is further expanding its international research cooperation: A partnership with the renowned National Institute of Informatics (NII) in Tokyo has been concluded in the form of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The partnership enables researchers from both institutions to advance joint research projects in the field of computer science and to intensify scientific exchange through research visits.

Master’s students and doctoral candidates at the UTN can already apply for a Global Exchange Program to conduct research at the NII and gain experience abroad. The program focuses in particular on the fields of artificial intelligence and robotics. The direct exchange with international researchers should not only promote the students’ professional excellence, but also their intercultural skills – a decisive factor for a successful career in the global science and technology landscape.

“The National Institute of Informatics in Japan is one of the world’s leading research and development institutions in the field of computer science. The collaboration with the NII in Tokyo opens up valuable new perspectives for our researchers and students, strengthens UTN’s international network and emphasizes UTN’s claim to international excellence. We are looking forward to this cooperation and the resulting research findings,” says UTN President Prof. Dr. Michael Huth.

Leading Japanese research institution in computer science

The National Institute of Informatics (NII) in the heart of Tokyo is a leading research institution with the aim of conducting cutting-edge research in computer science. It is part of the Research Organisation of Information and Systems (ROIS) and is committed to innovative digital infrastructures and international cooperation. In addition to basic research, the NII also runs a prestigious exchange programme for international researchers.

Cooperation with the Lab for Fundamental AI

The cooperation between the two universities is the result of close collaboration between UTN’s Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, in particular the Fundamental AI Lab of Prof. Dr. Yuki Asano and the Lab for Multimedia Understanding and Knowledge Discovery at the NII with Prof. Dr. Satoh Shin’ichi. “We are very pleased about the collaboration with the UTN. Interdisciplinary and international exchange is crucial to solving complex challenges in the field of artificial intelligence,” emphasises Prof. Dr. Satoh Shin’ichi.

About the University of Technology Nuremberg

The University of Technology Nuremberg (UTN), founded in 2021, is the first newly established public university in Bavaria since 1978. The UTN is a living laboratory building a university for the age of AI and the rapidly advancing changes in technology, business and society. The UTN strives to become a strong regional force in research, teaching and transfer and an internationally leading university of the 21st century with regional roots and a global outlook.

The 37-hectare, sustainable UTN campus will form the center of the new Lichtenreuth district in Nuremberg, close to the historic city center. Around 6,000 students, 200 professors and at least 2,000 employees will study and work there. Study programs will integrate aspects of technology, liberal arts, social sciences and natural sciences to ideally prepare students for the interdisciplinary requirements of the new world of work.
