On the UTN campus: Ohm opens modular building for health sciences

The UTN campus is growing: On 3 April 2025, Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm (Ohm) opened a modular building on the campus of the University of Technology Nuremberg (UTN) together with Science Minister Markus Blume. The building will be used by the Nuremberg School of Health to house the health sciences.

The new modular building in Dr.-Luise-Herzberg-Straße is located on the UTN campus in Nuremberg-Lichtenreuth, right next to the first UTN building, ‘Cube One’. The space of around 1,000 square metres will be used by the Ohm’s Faculty of Health Sciences, the Nuremberg School of Health (SoH). The SoH was created in 2021 from a cooperation between the university and Klinikum Nuremberg (Nuremberg Hospital). It will be the 13th faculty at the Ohm and will specialize in high-tech integration, IT interfaces, management and data skills in healthcare and midwifery science.

“The opening of the new modular building marks a significant step for our university and the Nuremberg School of Health,” said Ohm President Prof. Dr. Niels Oberbeck. “We are creating optimal conditions here for the training of future healthcare professionals. The building fulfils the latest structural requirements and integrates contemporary work concepts, creating ideal conditions for our staff and students. We are also delighted about the excellent collaboration with the University of Technology Nuremberg – it underlines our close partnership and can serve as a model for institutional collaboration.”

The modular building offers space for seminars, teaching and administration on three floors. There are three seminar rooms and a large foyer with seating for students on the ground floor. The first floor comprises further seminar rooms, an IT laboratory and a room for practical lessons. Green hydroponic elements and seating areas create a pleasant atmosphere. The administration is housed on the first floor, supplemented by shared desk workstations, co-working offices, a meeting room and two UTN offices.

The 15 SoH professors and staff have already moved into their new workspaces, and teaching for the current 200-plus students will begin in the summer semester of 2025. The SoH’s practice-oriented range of courses includes the Bachelor’s degree programs in Midwifery Science and Digital Health Management, while the Master’s degree program in Digital Health Analytics will begin in the coming winter semester. The degree programs place a particular focus on the close integration of theory and practice, the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare and interprofessional training in healthcare.

The total costs for the construction of the modular building amount to around 9 million euros, most of which was spent from the Hightech Agenda Bayern modular building program (around 7 million euros). It is therefore part of the Bavarian state government’s 5.5 billion euro innovation offensive to increase study place capacities, strengthen the healthcare sector and promote regional university development.

Comments on the opening of the modular building

  • Markus Blume, Bavarian State Minister of Science and the Arts: “Here, what belongs together grows together: The opening of the HTA modular building of the School of Health at Technische Hochschule Nürnberg is the culmination of a congenial cooperation: The Ohm with its newest faculty of health sciences, the Nuremberg Hospital and now also the UTN are together a real trump card for the Nuremberg health region. The 9 million euros for the Ohm’s modular building are money well spent. We want to further develop the healthcare region in and around Nuremberg scientifically and break new ground together in the future. High-tech and the heart belong together, because state-of-the-art medicine always serves people!”
  • Prof. Dr. Vera Antonia Büchner, Founding Dean of the Nuremberg School of Health: “Four years after it was founded, the modular building has given the Nuremberg School of Health a home. We are delighted to be moving into the spacious premises with state-of-the-art equipment: They will enable high-quality teaching in our degree programs, the implementation of complex research projects and the transfer of knowledge to business and society.”
  • Marcus König, Mayor of the City of Nuremberg: “Nuremberg as a center of science shows how it works: with mutual support in an active network and forward-looking collaborations. At the same time, the School of Health is also important for Nuremberg as a medical center, as our hospital played a key role in its development. Good luck!”
  • Prof. Dr. Michael Huth, Founding President of the University of Technology Nuremberg: “We are delighted that Technische Hochschule Nürnberg is moving to our campus with its modern modular building – in the immediate vicinity of our first campus building, Cube One. The new location for Ohm Health Sciences is already enriching the atmosphere and student life on the UTN campus during the construction of the UTN building. As a network university, we look forward to continuing our excellent collaboration with the Ohm and wish them a successful start.”
  • Matthias Franz, Head of the Erlangen-Nuremberg State Building Authority: “Here in Lichtenreuth along Dr.-Luise-Herzberg-Straße, Nuremberg’s most modern university buildings are currently lined up next to each other. Our task as the Erlangen-Nuremberg State Building Authority was to plan and realize the facilities required by the Nuremberg School of Health for teaching and research within a very short space of time. Four years after the founding event of the Nuremberg School of Health, we can now celebrate the opening of the new modular building together. Congratulations!”
