Bavarian AI Accelerator: Supporting SMEs in the implementation of the EU’s ‘AI Act’

Companies should be able to easily check their AI systems to see whether they fulfil the new requirements of the AI Act. The Bavarian AI Act Accelerator supports small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular in this endeavour. Researchers at LMU, TUM and UTN are developing a system for automated verification for this purpose. The Bavarian State Ministry for Digital Affairs is funding the AI Accelerator with 1.6 million euros from December 2024 to December 2026.

The European legislative initiative to regulate artificial intelligence (‘AI Act’) has been in force since 1 August 2024. From 2 February 2025, the first elements of the complex set of regulations will become binding: a challenge especially for small and medium-sized enterprises and start-ups that want to benefit from artificial intelligence and drive innovation, as well as the public sector.

The Bavarian Innovation Accelerator is designed to help them fulfil the new requirements. It aims to lower the barriers to the use of artificial intelligence in companies and bring Bavaria into the AI age more effectively. The Bavarian State Ministry for Digital Affairs is funding the project, which is being implemented by the non-profit appliedAI Institute for Europe under the scientific leadership of LMU Munich together with TU Munich and the University of Technology Nuremberg. “With the Bavarian Innovation Accelerator, we are providing targeted support to companies and institutions so that they can take advantage of the opportunities offered by AI without falling foul of regulatory hurdles,” said Digital Minister Dr. Fabian Mehring. “We are erecting a protective shield over the Bavarian economy against excessive EU regulation. Bavaria is thus sending a signal against bureaucracy and overregulation as well as in favour of innovative strength and digital sovereignty.”
