The development of the new campus of the University of Technology Nuremberg (UTN) continues. The design competition for two additional buildings in the north side of the campus area has now been completed.
NUREMBERG. Approximately eight months after the start of the design competition, the concept of team Burckhardt+Partner GmbH (Berlin) with Buro Happold GmbH (Berlin) was chosen on March 9, 2023. The jury was particularly impressed by the clear urban planning decision to situate the two buildings differently. It is making the head building more prominent, while the introverted second structure slightly recedes, leaving design space for all the other buildings yet to be planned.
“The chosen design of team Burckhardt+Partner GmbH (Berlin) presents itself as a mediator between the campus center and the park due to the high transparency of the head building. With its centerpiece, the lowered centrally located teaching hall, a skillful gesture is inserted in a prominent position that puts students in the center of attention. This clear, generous and inviting design approach formulates an excellent address for a new university,” praises the chairwoman of the jury, Prof. Gesine Weinmiller. Andreas Sattler from the Düsseldorf-based support office FALTIN+SATTLER, who accompanied the process, recalls that it was primarily due to the intensive preparations and the interdisciplinary planning approach that a high level of design, sustainability and technical quality was achieved in the competition.
The Erlangen-Nuremberg State Building Authority, which is responsible for implementing the first phase of the project, is also very satisfied with the results of the competition and Division Manager Michael Lueb is delighted: “Now, the concept of an innovative university where people would like to study has become more concrete.” The founding president of UTN, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Hans Jürgen Prömel, added that the aspirations of the young university are fully reflected in the winning entry: “The conclusion of the planning competition makes it clear that UTN is taking on more shape with each passing day and that its development is progressing steadily: on the campus grounds, but also with the start of teaching and research activities.”
Background Information
In May 2017, the Free State of Bavaria decided to establish a technical university in Nuremberg. UTN is to become a model university – consistently interdisciplinary, with an innovative range of subjects and new teaching and learning methods. The spatial model for the young university is to build an urban and lively campus for about 6,000 students. From the beginning, it is to be integrated into the surroundings, be sustainable and resource-saving, and bear responsibility with regard to climate protection and climate adaptation. With the two new buildings, the young university continues taking shape.
In order to meet the requirements, the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Art, represented by the State Building Authority Erlangen-Nuremberg, announced a planning competition according to RPW 2013. The search was on for an energy- and cost-efficient as well as climate-neutral building concept, which stands for an urban, lively campus, creating identity in a future-oriented and innovative way. 15 international design teams participated in the interdisciplinary competition. The jury verified four concepts and was able to make a final decision on March 9, 2023. The main focus was not on the collection of exceptional individual architectures, but on the expansion of the structural environment. The buildings are to be individual but also fit into the urban framework and become an integral part of the campus. Accordingly, the further structural development was considered in the planning of the individual buildings. At the same time, the first stage of development should already have a spatial quality and identity.
