Minister-President of Bavaria Dr. Markus Söder: “With the foundation of the University of Technology Nuremberg, Bavaria ventures into new territory with the creation of a new prototype university culture. We will invest 1.2 billion Euro for up to 6,000 students. We will log onto a network of research and development to reach a new level of science.” With the festive groundbreaking ceremony, construction work for the University of Technology Nuremberg has officially begun. The first building to be erected on the plot on Brunecker Straße will be a multi-use building.
NUREMBERG. “Interdisciplinary, international and digital – those are the trademarks of the University of Technology Nuremberg. The site on Brunecker Straße will house a model university, which will be exemplary both in Bavaria and on a national level. Besides a smart functional concept and committed and enthusiastic personnel, what is needed is an excellent structural planning and infrastructure. Today’s groundbreaking ceremony shows that this has been taken care of. Today marks an important milestone, not only for the University of Technology Nuremberg, but also for the academic landscape of Bavaria”, announced Bavaria’s Minister of Science Bernd Sibler during the groundbreaking ceremony.
Construction of Access Roads Finalized
The University of Technology Nuremberg was founded in January 2021 as the tenth state-run university in Bavaria. With the first groundbreaking ceremony only eight months later, construction work can now officially start on the first building. The construction of access roads has meanwhile been finalized. The construction site of the University of Technology Nuremberg is situated on Brunecker Straße in the south of Nuremberg, where a completely new urban district will be created in the next few years. Marcus König, the Lord Mayor of Nuremberg, is convinced: “It is a historic moment for our city. The University of Technology becomes visible and will be the heart of the new district of Lichtenreuth. The challenge now is to let the new center of science form a bond with the urban structure as an innovative place of learning and living. Today marks the start of our joint effort. We are grateful to the State of Bavaria for paving the way for this once-in-a-lifetime project.”
Dr. Michael Fraas, Head of Nuremberg’s Department for Science and Economic Affairs, is convinced that “the University of Technology Nuremberg will considerably enrich our system of economic innovation. It will strengthen the economic and academic landscape of the metropolitan region of Nuremberg and will fuel all technology- and science-based enterprises in the area. Ultimately, it will result in new high-tech startups and business development.”
Multi-use Building for the Executive Board and Administration
The first building on the new campus will be the multi-use building. It will predominantly house the Executive Board, the administration and various central units of the University of Technology Nuremberg. Temporarily, the chairs of the first departments and their executive staff will also be located in the multi-use building. With an area of approximately 2,500 square meter, the building will house up to 120 persons. “This is a unique chance to create an interdisciplinary, international and digital technical university based on the latest state of the art. Nuremberg is an excellent location to put such a project into practice. The multi-use building is a first step in this direction”, says Prof. Dr. Hans Jürgen Prömel, the Founding President of the University of Technology Nuremberg. The team supporting the President and Kanzler Dr. Markus Zanner is scheduled to move into the building at the end of 2023. Until then, the structural work on the construction of the university and the drafting of a concept for research and teaching is under way in the preliminary quarters in Ulmenstraße.
A Climate-friendly Campus
The winning design for the structural and urban design framework was developed by the planning team of Ferdinand Heide Architekten/TOPOS. The concept is centered around an embedded, urban and sustainable campus. Besides nature protection and biodiversity conservation, the preservation of valuable green elements is of crucial importance for the construction of the University of Technology Nuremberg. The aim is to create a climate-neutral campus based mainly on renewable energies. Regarding the envisaged sustainable buildings, the focus is on the use of ecological building materials, such as woodwork. Also, the buildings have been designed to maximize flexibility regarding future use.
